Lama Yeshe’s Request for Geshe Kelsang to come to England

This is a little bit of history that I hadn’t known about before tonight. It’s now on the Wikipedia article about Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. We are so fortunate that Lama Yeshe and Trijang Rinpoche requested Geshe Kelsang to come to the West and that he accepted.

In Geshe Kelsang’s own words:

When I was in India I received an invitation from Manjushri Institute in England through Lama Yeshe, who was my very close friend in Tibet. He and I were from the same monastery in Tibet and we had the same Teacher. He wrote to me and requested me please to go to England and give Dharma teachings. I received this invitation but I didn’t answer for two months. At that time it was difficult for me to say yes due to certain commitments to local Tibetan people, and also I thought how could I teach as I could not speak English? I had no confidence. Lama Yeshe was very clever; he went to visit my root Guru Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, and requested him to ask me to go to England to teach Dharma. He knew if my root Guru asked me, then I would agree to go.

Smears About Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s Retreat in India

Although Geshe Kelsang refuted this smear in an interview in 1997. Tenzin Peljor and others continue to spread lies about Geshe Kelsang’s retreat in India. The letter referred to in the question is the Sera Expulsion Letter

Q: Geshe-la, in their letter it says that you suffered from chronic TB while living in Mussourie, India, and you did not do long retreat. Can you clarify this, please?

GKG: I did a long retreat for many years in Nepal near the border of Tibet in the Himalayan region. The place is called Bangthog Damthang, and I was sponsored by my sister Dekyi who is now living in Switzerland. Later, I did many long retreats in the Dalhousie mountains near Dharamsala.

In Mussourie, every winter for several months I did retreat. When I was not in retreat I was trying to help families by performing healing rituals and special pujas. Before I went to Mussourie I lived in Buxa and fell sick there with recurrent chest infections, but it was not serious. Later, in Mussourie the chest infections continued to recur, but I was never admitted to hospital. In this life, I have never spent even one night in hospital! My relatives in Mussourie were urging me to have a thorough check up so I was examined by three different doctors. Two of them said that I had no disease, but that I needed to build up my bodily strength, and one doctor said that maybe I had TB. In reality it was difficult to understand the real problem.

Later, when I was living in England, I experienced continual physical weakness until finally I went with two Western assistants to London for three weeks and was examined by two specialists. They took many X-rays and did many other tests. The final result was that both doctors said there was no disease, just lung weakness. They said I needed fresh air, sunshine, exercise and rest to build up my strength.

Is the Dalai Lama the Pope of Buddhism?

One of the smears of the New Kadampa Tradition is that the NKT is a splinter group from the main Tibetan Buddhist traditions, because the NKT does not follow the Dalai Lama. Many Westerners have the mistaken view that the Dalai Lama is the head or Pope of all Buddhists. It is true that the NKT does not follow the Dalai Lama, but it is not true that the NKT is a splinter group. Below are quotes from other articles which have already addressed this topic.

“The Dalai Lama is not the head of any of the four traditions of Tibetan Buddhism – the Nyingmas, Kagyus, Sakyas and Gelugpas. Each sect of Tibetan Buddhism has its own head. Many people mistakenly think that the Dalai Lama is the head of Tibetan Buddhism, or at least of the Gelugpa school, but if he is not head of any of the individual schools of Tibetan Buddhism, how can he be head of the whole Tradition? There is no ‘Pope’ of Tibetan Buddhism.

The confusion about the Dalai Lama’s religious authority lies in the fact that he is a politician who is also a monk. When the Dalai Lama speaks, is it a politician who is speaking or is it a spiritual leader? No-one is quite sure, but clearly it can’t be both because the aims of politics and religion are opposite and contradictory. It’s not safe for a monk to do the job of politician unless the monk is stronger than the politician. If not, the monk becomes a politician who abuses religion for worldly goals rather than a religious leader who uses power and influence to accomplish spiritual goals.” from the article entitled ‘On What Authority Does the Dalai Lama Do These Things?‘ from the Wisdom Buddha Dorje Shugden Blog wisdombuddhadorjeshugden.blogspot.com

From the New Kadampa Truth website:

“Truth: Some people say that the NKT has split from the Dalai Lama, but the Dalai Lama is the political leader of Tibetans in exile and not the head of any of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism nor of Mahayana Buddhism in general, so there is nothing to split from. Although he is considered the embodiment of religion and politics as a God King for many Tibetan natives, he is not the spiritual leader for all Tibetans, for all Mahayana Buddhists, nor for the NKT.” more about this

Western Shugden Society – Unlocked? Or was it ever Locked?

This is another one of Tenzin Peljor’s smears refuted. Tenzin Peljor claims to have unlocked the secrets of the Western Shugden Society. He claims on multiple sites (one of which was barred from flickr for storing defamatory material) that the Western Shugden Society is really the New Kadampa Tradition in disguise and then goes through his usual routine of claiming the NKT is a cult (because it says so on the Cult Information Centre website). Interestingly, the main references (links) of the Cult Information Centre about the NKT are Tibetan Government in Exile websites and at least two sites created by or moderated by Peljor. You didn’t have anything to do with those links did you Peljor?

From the New Kadampa Truth website:

Truth: It is the Western Shugden Society (WSS) that is demonstrating against the Dalai Lama, not the NKT. The WSS is an ad hoc coalition of Dorje Shugden practitioners from many different countries, including more Tibetans than Westerners.

Some NKT detractors have created websites and posted on blogs to allege that it is the NKT that is demonstrating against the Dalai Lama because there are many prominent and senior NKT practitioners visible at the demonstrations. However, those who attend the demonstrations do so as individual Dorje Shugden practitioners, not as representatives of the NKT. Everyone who practices Kadam Dharma is a practitioner of Dorje Shugden so it is not surprising that there are a great number of Kadampas supporting the demonstrations.

Nor are they wrong to do so. For the reasons why Kadampa practitioners everywhere oppose the Dalai Lama’s ban of their Protector practice and attempted suppression of their religious tradition, please see www.WesternShugdenSociety.org and www.WisdomBuddhaDorjeShugden.org.”
