The FPMT’s Restrictions on Dorje Shugden Practitioners

New article from the New Kadampa Truth site:

From the FPMT website: “Restriction: FPMT has recently issued a new policy regarding the Shugden practice in accordance with the wishes of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Lama Zopa Rinpoche has expressed the wish “not to have a guru-disciple relationship with anyone who is practicing Shugden.”

Since Lama Zopa is still the nominal head of the FPMT, this means that Tibetan politics has now irreversibly permeated the FPMT. It means that not even Lama Zopa’s precious teachers, Trijang Rinpoche or Lama Yeshe, or their reincarnations, would be allowed to attend Lama Zopa’s teachings.

FPMT members have long accused the NKT of being a sectarian cult. The irony is that the NKT is an open and tolerant organization that has never turned anyone away from a teaching due to their religious beliefs. This religious belief is the 400-year old practice passed down through generations of fully accomplished Buddhist masters, including half the lineage Gurus of the FPMT.

Meanwhile, it is unclear whether or not Lama Osel (the reincarnation of Lama Yeshe) would countenance this latest extraordinary development. He has kept his distance from the FPMT for the last few years. The de facto head of the FPMT is now the Dalai Lama.

Lama Zopa has said this about himself and Lama Yeshe, the Founder of the FPMT:

“Of course, Lama and I practiced Dorje Shugden for many years. That was always the main thing that Lama did whenever there were problems to overcome. At the beginning of every Kopan course, Lama always did Shugden puja to eliminate hindrances.”

Wow, Dorje Shugden practitioners no longer allowed to Lama Zopa’s teachings?!?! This really is the beginning of the end for a Dharma untainted by politics in the FPMT.

How can the FPMT have the presumption to call the NKT sectarian and cultish? As you quote from New Kadampa Truth, never has the NKT (Western Dorje Shugden practitioners) ever turned away anyone from a teaching because of their religious beliefs. Never. Let alone other Buddhists. I presume that, as with the Dalai Lama’s teachings, absolutely everybody else is allowed to attend, including those of completely different religions? — it is just Buddhist Dorje Shugden practitioners who are barred? Even in Tibet I doubt that such a thing happened — I have never heard of it anyway. What happened to the Buddhist principles of tolerance and love?

What has happened here?! Is it even believable?! This ugly mixture of religion and Tibetan politics started by the 14th Dalai Lama and espoused so unquestioningly by Lama Zopa and many members of the FPMT is spreading its tentacles even into Dharma in the West, polluting it horribly.

And where is Lama Yeshe’s reincarnation, Lama Osel? Surely he would never put up with this if he had any influence in the FPMT? Has the FPMT now been completely taken over by the Dalai Lama? It just seems to be Tibetan Buddhism transplanted wholesale into the West, along with all the political mixing that goes along with having the Dalai Lama, the unelected ruler of Tibet, in charge. Where are the Westerners in this? Do they have nothing to say about this policy of blatant discrimination?

To be honest, I am really completely amazed that this policy has been enacted and advertised without a murmur of opposition. It reminds me of the Jim Crow laws.

    How sad.

Dorje Shugden practioners are now “separate AND unequal.” It’s religious segregation at its worst.

I used to have a lot of respect for Lama Zopa and used to read some of his teachings. I regarded him as a pure, holy being, but since it has become clear that the FPMT in general has been harming the NKT over the years by discouraging people from coming to classes, defacing publicity and contacting managers at the places where NKT classes are held and trying to persuade them not to allow them to continue, I’ve lost faith in the whole organization. I’d be disgusted if NKT did those things to FPMT; it’s not Mahayana Buddhism. Heck, it’s not BUDDHISM!

This is the final straw from Lama Zopa, following the same political and sectarian stance as the Dalai Lama and denying Dharma to practitioners of the same protector that Lama Yeshe used to rely upon. I’m amazed that Lama Zopa doesn’t realize that the implication of his actions is that he’s saying that his own Teacher Lama Yeshe was an ignorant spirit worshiper. I wonder what Lama Yeshe would have to say about how his organization has turned out? It’s completely shameful. This degeneration has happened in one generation so what does the future hold? It doesn’t look good.

What’s also shameful is if you look at the FPMT website, the Dalai Lama’s picture is higher than that of all the great Masters such as Trijang Rinpoche, Song Rinpoche and Ling Rinpoche, even though the Dalai Lama was their student.

    Has the world gone mad?

i did not at all read it like it is presented here. I read that staff of fpmt does not do the practice and so on.
They are free not to practice as well!

expressed the wish “not to have a guru-disciple relationship with anyone who is practicing Shugden.”

this statement does not say shugden practitioners are npt allowed at Teachings, it says Lama Zopa Rinpoche will not be taking any shugden practicing persons as His Students.
